BioGaia GASTRUS
Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 & ATCC PTA 6475 Probiotic
BioGaia Gastrus is a food probiotic supplement containing the patented human origin lactic acid bacterium Limosilactobacillus reuteri (formerly known as Lactobacillus reuteri).
Because both Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 and Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC PTA 6475 strains in Gastrus naturally colonize humans they have a strong adaptation to persist and interact with humans. BioGaia Gastrus has been tested in clinical trials and proven effective and safe. There are over 200 studies involving more than 19,000 people studying the effects of L. reuteri DSM 17938 and L. reuteri ATCC PTA 6475 strains
What is Limosilactobacillus reuteri / Lactobacillus reuteri?
One of the most studied probiotics in the world
Limosilactobacillus reuteri (formerly known as Lactobacillus reuteri) is a probiotic bacterium that has co-evolved with humans since the beginning of time, and because of that it is adapted to its host. L. reuteri is one of the first bacterial species to naturally become established in the microbiota of the new-born. BioGaia’s probiotic products with L. reuteri are among the most scientifically well-documented probiotics in the world in terms of both efficacy and safety.
To date the efficacy and safety of BioGaia’s different strains of L. reuteri have been documented in 258 clinical studies on approximately 21,000 people of all ages (Dec 2022).
127 studies of BioGaia’s strain of L reuteri have been conducted in children, ranging from newborns to 18 years old, and 131 studies in adults.
Positive results have been shown for several gastrointestinal disorders, oral health, and bone health.
The first strain of L. reuteri for human use, L. reuteri DSM 17938, was isolated in 1990 from the breast milk of a Peruvian mother living in the Andes. L. reuteri ATCC PTA 5289 was isolated from the oral cavity of a Japanese woman with exceptional good oral health. L. reuteri ATCC PTA 6475 is an anti-inflammatory strain isolated from breast milk of a Finnish woman.
Today, L. reuteri bacteria are produced under controlled conditions in modern production facilities. For bacteria to grow and duplicate, the right food and temperature are provided. Tests and quality control ensure that each dose contains the right number of viable organisms.

FAQ
Are there any side effects from taking BioGaia Gastrus probiotics?
Since every gastrointestinal tract is unique some individuals might experience a temporary change in gut motility. BioGaia probiotics very rarely cause side effects in the amounts recommended for the products. Some individuals might experience gas (flatulence), but that generally disappears after a few days. No serious adverse effects have been observed in clinical trials up to the maximum tested dosage of 10 billion CFU per day.
What are probiotics?
Probiotics are good bacteria that can be found in dietary supplements and sometimes in dairy products. Probiotics are defined as ”live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.” (WHO/FAO 2002, Hill C et al. 2014). An important criterium for qualifying as a true probiotic is that health benefits have been proven in clinical studies. Furthermore, a probiotic product must contain the same bacterial strain(s) and the same dose that was used in the clinical studies.
Are multi-strain products better than single-strain probiotic products?
Multi-strain products containing several strains in high doses do not necessarily have a better effect than a single-strain product. Important criteria when choosing a probiotic product are:
• The probiotic bacteria must be defined on strain level
• The probiotic product must have been tested in human clinical studies, with the same dose and with the same bacterial strain(s) as in the commercial product.
Are BioGaia products free from common allergens?
Common allergens such as egg, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish and soy have not been used in the manufacturing of BioGaia products.
