As a vital part of the endocannabinoid system, Anandamide helps regulate and control many critical bodily functions. Anandamide was the first endocannabinoid identified, is synthesized by neurons and peripheral tissues, and acts as a messenger molecule involved in memory, stress response, anxiety, and mood. Like the psychoactive constituent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) from Cannabis, Anandamide binds to and activates Cannabinoid Type 1 Receptors (CB1Rs) located in many areas of the brain and body. Anandamide Homeostasis
Although the body typically produces Anandamide as it is needed, loss of Anandamide homeostasis can occur in some individuals, resulting in a reduction in optimal responses to the stressors of everyday life. Having excessive Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase (FAAH) activity can aggravate the degradation of Anandamide, leading to compromised adaptation to stress- and anxiety provoking experiences. Although research on FAAH inhibitors has yielded mixed results, a randomized, controlled clinical trial found that FAAH inhibition increases baseline anandamide levels 10-fold in healthy adults. The resultant Anandamide levels decreased autonomic stress reactivity, decreased the recall of fear extinction memories, and attenuated the anxiogenic effects of stress.
